Hi,
I've been using CHDK on my S3is and loving it.  Now I've downloaded version 49 for my new IXUS 860is, but when I download it there is no PS.FIR file, just the DISKBOOT.BIN.
I have zero skills at this sort of thing, if anybody could let me know how I can get this running on my camera I would appreciate it a great deal.
Cheers
Django

Check the FAQ  at the wikia page. Ixus 860 does not need ps.fir to run.

I can get this to run on a 32GB SD card (when I start the camera with play it starts the camera and loads the allbest CHDK).  When I try this on my 8GB SDHC it just won't run the CHDK.  I have tried using bootsect.exe and bootable.exe to make the SDHC card bootable, but I'm not sure it even is.  I have quintuple checked that the card is locked, it has the .bin on it, and I have done everything I can to make it bootable (how do I check that it's bootable?).  Please note that I have read about SDHC's not being compatible with getting CHDK to "autorun" (it seems to autorun fine on the 32GB SD) - however the advice in the FAQ says that the main menu should have a new option to "run firmware" (or something), and my menu doesn't have that option (perhaps because it's DryOS).

In a separate issue, whenever the "half press" menu buttons (macro/iso/flash/timer) are HALF pressed, they highlight in green their respective icon in the background and that causes the whole CHDK menu screen to be blanked out (which is pretty annoying considering you have to use the menu buttons to move!).  This can be overcome by switching to 'play' mode instead of 'shooting' mode, but I thought I'd mention it nonetheless.  Cheers!

Appreciate any comments!

Hi

(I suppose you meant to write '32 MB card'  there)

let me answer with a quote from the FAQ:

Quote
Note: Unfortunately, autoload does not work with FAT32-formatted SD-cards. This means: cards up to and including 2 GB will work, cards larger than 2 GB won't.

Note2: 4 GB cards can support the autoload feature if they are formated in FAT16 manually. To format SD-card in Windows command line just type 'format X: /fs:fat' (where X: - a drive letter of mounted SD-card). But be aware that the formatting of 4 GB cards in FAT16 leads to non-standard 64K cluster size. The correct support of such cluster size is not guaranteed.

there is also a topic about it here:

Autoboot with 8GB and HDHacker Possibillity

from what I read in this topic it seems the 'easiest' option is to just force-format your card to 4GB@FAT16 - using the entire
card involves a special Windows driver to manage partitions.

Yes, that is the problem that I'm having. Now that you mention it it seems to be related to the "touch menu" icons. I have this feature turned off in the camera menu, but only when the chdk menu is up does the camera act like you are pressing the touch menu buttons on the contoller. It highlights the appropriate item in green, which redraws the menu erasing the chdk menu.  Unfortunately it is not possible to operate CHDK without using the controller.  When the CHDK menu is not up the icons don't change color.

Yes, 32MB!

Thank you very much for the "HDHacker" link.  I will try it!

I did read the FAQ article before posting, but I thought that because I didn't need autoload, and would be happy to do a "manual load", that I could do a manual load with an 8GB card.

Right now I'll format in FAT16 and see what the future holds.

I have the touch menu option also turned off, but yes it doesn't stop the green highlighting and thus screen redraw which kills the menu.

Thank you warmly for your help.

Some news for this "touch icons" behaviour ?  ???
It's a little bit annoying switching to play mode for setting up things in the chdk menu.

How did you get it running? I have my card made bootable and locked, just like the FAQ sais, I have the proper diskboot.bin on it, and I start it like I should (I even watched it on youtube, just to make sure, I'm doing the right thing), and I still can not see the "firmware" upgrade thing in nonoe of the menus.

Another thing:

- If I finally get it working, which menu column will be the appropriate one? (out of the 4 tabs on top)

- If I have my memory card locked, like FAQ says, how am I going to take any pictures?

Thanks guys

Hello zoltansn,

pls. add your cam & firmware version to your profil (personal text).

Do you have formatted your card with FAT16 ? - FAT32 don't work !  (size of your card ?)

On Ixus 860is there's no firmware update menu item - CHDK starts when you turn on with locked card, you'll see see the blue print button/LED lit 1/2 second after power on.

With CHDK the cam always starts in play mode, press the shutter to go to record mode.

To get the CHDK menu press the print button, then press menu...don't forget to disable the ALT mode by pressing print again...

The card locking mechanism is done by software, with CHDK the cam can write on the card altough it is locked.
