CHDK on Powershot SX150

Hi, I want to buy a new Powershot SX150 IS  just to try CHDK. Spend some time reading the site and the wiki and I'm very impressed! Sound great if all of those options are available just with the usage of CHDK. My questions are related to Powershot SX150 IS - if any of you is using that one.

- Is there any problems with CHDK usage on that camera, I mean is CHDK usable at all? I'm asking because that comment: "CHDK for the Powershot SX150 is still alpha." in the wiki. I'm particularly interested in RAW image functionality. Is it usable? Never shoot in such format and want to try it.

- I'm a little bit uneasy because of that one "Some users have reported permanent camera damage which may be connected to CHDK, see Camera_failures_suspected_to_be_caused_by_CHDK#SX130 This is not certain, proceed at your own risk." Is there any problems at all with SX150, because that one is related to SX130 but it's placed in SX150 page.

Suppose the forum is the right place to ask all of that and hope some of you with SX150 IS will answer.

Regards,
S.

CHDK should be pretty usable on this camera. It's probably time to switch the alpha tag to beta at least. DNG  works.

It appears that notice was copied when the page was created. I suspect that was an accident, but I'm not completely sure that similar incidents were never reported for the sx150. The sx150 porting thread http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=6953  is the most likely place it would have been reported if it did happen.  The connection between the lens errors and CHDK was never confirmed even on the sx130.

I would rate the risk as very low, but of course there is no guarantee (on any camera)
Don't forget what the H stands for.

A LOT of digital cameras succumb because of lens failure.  Some even meet their demise the very first time they are used, even when using proprietary, in our case Canon firmware, software.  If/when this happens do we blame Canon for their software or do we attribute it to the hardware?  I have never had a problem using CHDK with my SX130 and if/when I have a lens failure I certainly won't be inclined to blame the software, whether I am using the proprietary software or CHDK.  Look on the auction sites and you will see a myriad of cameras for sale "As-Is" "For Parts or Repair Only."  The large majority of these cameras are not Canon products.  I, personally, think it is an inherent weakness of P&S cameras and is part of the risk we take when we buy one.  I would have absolutely no problem in using CHDK on an SX150 if I owned one.  Just my opinion.

Thanks for the replays. I'm going to buy that one just because the CHDK. Was into the shop before one hour armed with memory card with two files on it - ver.req and vers.req. The only thing I gathered from the camera was the time :(  was not able to check the firmware maybe because ver.req. I'm going to remove that one from the card and maybe tomorrow will try again checking the firmware.

Take a pictures with the camera and use ACID to identify the firmware version.

It's very likely that all the firmware versions of this camera have been seen by now. If there's no complaints in the porting thread ( http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=6953.0 ) about unsupported versions, the chances are high that you will get a supported version.
