I'm thinking about purchasing either an A720IS or an A550 for the sole purpose of lightning photography. After reading about the delays, I wonder if either of those is capable of the 100 ms responsiveness mentioned in this thread:

Highest Speed Motion-Detection (Lightning) Scripts

There weren't that many results in the Fastest Motion-Detection Response field.

So the only safe choice would be the S3 IS then, which costs about double what I had in my mind. Are there any general lines visible, which cameras might be as fast as that one? I mean, what features make the S3 IS that fast? The DIGIC version, a certain shutter implementation or something like that? Educated guesses anyone?

I'm so sorry Barney. Been very busy with all sorts of stuff lately, you know those boring bits of life?

Anyway, had some problems with my desktop a few weeks ago. Lost some stuff but have most of it back now. It will be a week or so before I'll have time to work on the test program, but now my S5 is supported I'm very keen. Can I ask you how that "beta" version went? If it works ok and you think it's better than v2, would you mind posting it for others as I haven't found that stuff on my crashed vmware machine yet. Otherwise if you have some tips to make it "usable" then PM me please. Some good news is I have recently bought a laptop so I now have an LCD to test it on too!

I seem to get 100-160 ms typically on my S5IS (various settings). I'm using a different MD test, though, I made one myself (the md_test programs didn't work on my PCs for some reason, I do get the 'blip' but nothing afterwards) in HTML+JS. It's as accurate as my browser's timing, which I haven't calibrated anywhere. It almost passes acid3, though, lots of drawing speed optimizations have been done in it lately (Opera 9.5 alpha/beta, newest weekly) so I'm guessing it's fairly accurate. I'll make it user-friendly and put it online in a few minutes :p

Oh and Barney, can you tell me the exact MD settings you used on your S3? I already noticed that I get different results with different settings but maybe yours are the magic settings for S-series :)

I don't know why MD_Test wouldn't work on your PC's DataGhost. It's just simple graphics - no Directx or anything.

I'm getting around 160ms with my S5 in initial tests too. I hope this camera doesn't turn out slower.

Motion detector speed test That's my webbased MD-meter, timing all depends on the speed of your browser. As jonnythe is getting about the same values as me, I guess it's pretty accurate. I only used it with Opera, I quickly tested it with Firefox and Safari and they seems to work. IE6 refuses to render the table, I don't know about IE7/8.

That's how my original tester worked. But as the MD and scripts got faster I realized the only way to do it accurately was to take into account monitors scan from top to bottom. Since Barney was getting 60ms response at one stage the timing errors approach the response time, unless a way of using the vertical scan rate of the monitor can be used.
