Card Tricks - a small utility to help manage SD cards

[Edit 20-12-2010]                  Please note

- You can not use CardTricks to dump 'newer' DryOS cams; use the Canon Basic Script method (see here)

- CardTricks can not partition cards; this means that it can only create a fully 'CHDK bootable' card
if the size is 4 GB or smaller.

Note: had to lift the links out of the original post, or they won't work:

Thanks to fe50, program wiki info is here: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CardTricks
download latest version: CardTricks-144-SFX.exe - 510 kB

Hi

Just a small Windows shell for some of my favourite and most-used tools: bootable.exe and universal dumper
all credits go to their developers, which I believe to be (in no particular order) ewavr, Jef666 and RyeBrye,
if others want to get their nicks and/or names on the list, just tell me ...

I have tried my best to make it safe (ie, it will only accept "Removable" and "Unknown" types of drives) and
avoid 'unnecessary' operations (ie only offer formatting when no FAT16 is present, and only make bootable
when it isn't yet etc)
That said, take care anyway, it IS a formatting tool !

All source code and helper files included, 1 single executable 7-zip self extractor ; get 7-zip (free)  to check
source code before running it if you want. no registry entries (or reads, for that matter); stores a couple of
presets in an ini file in it's own directory.

Source code and helper files can be found in the CardTricks directory, generated by the
CardTricks-xxx-SFX.exe installer in the same directory the program is in.

Thanks to fe50, program wiki info is here: [link removed, see above]

Old versions - before 1.44 - got falsely flagged as malware - if this happens please update,
the distribution 'packaging' has been changed and tested, and no more false alarms (so far)

if you insist on older versions, or just like to see if 1.44 really scores 0 alarms on 35 scanners,
(instead of up to 5 / 35 for old versions) try an online scan

wim

edit 27-10-08: new link, thanks mariush
edit 27-01-09: new packing method to avoid false virus alerts (from version 1.44)

I have tried my best to make it safe (ie, it will only accept "Removable" and "Unknown" types of drives)

Well, it's very good, with one exclusion - after setting this driver (to make several partition on card) card reader looks as fixed hard drive. Maybe program requires some checkbox ("allow access to fixed drives") to allow access to such devices.

edit: Now I provide warning in my bootable.exe for non-removable drives.

@ewavr

Thanks, I'll try and put that in as well (at the moment it does FAT 16 only)
It will be hard for me to test large card functions, don't have any ...
I suppose the filter driver needs to be regsvr32'ed, if that's so, can it be done 'on the fly' (without reboot) ?

Meanwhile, here's version 1.01 with the unnecessary drive selects bug removed (also Jeff666's name corrected...)

edit DL removed, updated - see below (or above, depending on yr settings )

Updated to v. 1.1

updated - see later post

- Will now also format cards > 4 GB (FAT32 of course)
- Override protection for Fixed drives (but System drive, Home drive & Program drive still protected)
- Some tooltips added

enjoy

wim

edit: could somebody with a 4 GB card please verify if it's OK to allow a Universal Dumper to be
created with on this type of card, ie with 64K clusters, I mean does such a card actually work ?
thanks in advance (can't test this, don't have 'big' cards)
