I would like to be able to tell a camera to take a picture using my computer through a USB cable, without using an arduino or other microcontroller.

Is it possible to send a script to a camera through USB and tell it to execute? Ideally I would also want the image taken to be saved in a directory on the computer too.

All you need is a PTP (picture taking protocal) interface, which is officially supported in all current CHDK releases :

Sure, using CHDK or an unofficial version of SDM.

With SDM, you type the following on your PC :

sdmcon --sdm

Then after the <conn> prompts :-

<conn>record
<conn>shoot

That captures an image and stores it in a folder on your PC

This will not be supported in the official SDM 1.86 release.
