SX40 - remote, zoom no more working.

Canon SX40 HS with firmware 1.00f
Hi there. Yesterday, I played with a usb cable to be able to shoot through it. Fine! It worked giving short peak of a 4.5 V voltage. Obviously I had to enable such a feature in CHDK.
After that, I'm no more able to zoom neither in nor out, provided that I'm using CHDK. In fact, just making the SD card writable (switching the protection off), the camera is not loading CHDK and the zoom works correctly.

At this point I believe that the hw is OK but my CHDK configuration is guilty.

I'v had a look at the CHDK menu, but can't figure out an item I've touched that could have made such a mess.
Anyone con give a hint?

If you have CHDK loaded and you are in <ALT> mode (you will see the <ALT> symbol at the bottom of the screen) then the zoom lever will not move the lens.  This is so CHDK scripts can accept input from the lever.   If you exit <ALT> mode then the zoom lever should work again.

Thank you waterwingz for your prompt reply. Unfortunately your suggestion doesn't apply to me. I just switch the camera on, press the shoot button once, to get rid of the display of the last photo, and that's all. I have my usual screen, DO NOT have any <ALT> displayed. And the zoom lever doesn't work! Thanks again, Elio

OK. Maybe I've found the point. If remote control is enabled under.
Scripting parameter  - Remote parameters - enable remote[YES] , the zoom lever is inhibited.
For documentation, I had
Enable synchable remote yes
enable synch yes
 
I will investigate further and report my findings here. So far, the conclusion is that, if you want to shoot through a cable, you cannot zoom.

That is not correct.  If that is what you are seeing then there is a bug.   The only two effects of enabling the USB remote are that the camera will take a picture in response to power being applied to the USB connector and that the normal USB communications to a PC computer will be disable.

Update : what version of CHDK are you using ?  What is the full name of the file you used for putting CHDK on your SX40   (something like :  sx40hs-100d-1.1.0-2733-full.zip )

Me too,I believe it's a bug.

Time: 06:29:24
Camera: sx40hs
FW Vers: 100f
Compiler: GCC 4.4.3
I cannot report the exact name of the .zip file from which I installed CHDK. Sorry! Do you think I can get more info from the sw I have on the SD card? in case, give directions and I'll be glad to help.

Shall I try to use a more recent version?

Yes, 1.0.0 is *ancient*, and doesn't include the new remote code.

You were definitely right, waterwingz! I updated CHDK at 1.1.0-2749. Now, with remote enabled the zomm works perfectly.
Let me also bless Dave Mitchell, for his clever and excellent app STICK. I was in a nightmare, formattting and reformatting cards. Its app does the job in the flicker of the eye. I recommend it to everyone.
