I tried playkey on the A480 & S95 and they do stop functioning.
just fresh...but you wount think that:
Occured Time  2018:01:16 14:52:50
I retried, but the time seems to stay the same
If the time stamp on the ROMLOG does not change then you are most likely not seeing a crash and not what @Waechter is reporting.

Unless you are using the exact setup he is seeing, it seems like you have a different problem.

He also reported the PlayKey function working for other cameras so I'm suspecting this is camera model related.
Ported :   A1200    SD940   G10    Powershot N    G16

Small update :  reading back through this thread and the code, it seems calling the set_lcd_display( ) function when switching to playback mode caused crashing issues with some cameras.  I "fixed" it by inserting big sleep( ) statement and the actual root cause was not discovered.

I'll see what that tell us.

EDIT :  test script attached - switches to Playback without trying to turn off the LCD. Please test & report if that changes things?

could be different, but on bklite I do not have these issues.
then display goes dark, led on camera flashes (status led=0), shot is taken and display comes on.

So results look similar to waechter...the camera suddenly goes dead with lens open.
it is not bricked so i do not have to reload battery before it starts, I can start it again by pressing the on/off button.
it has just suddenly powered down after the display went dark

I've used the script without infinity or zoom(as you uploaded it)........the lens is closed while display was active(so this delay created an improvement, the script now moves the lens in correct position and ends up in play mode)..on the display you see last taken picture..it will not reopen. however it does not start again on the on/off button. it now powered down.

sorry uploaded the wrong romlog, hereby the correct one.

while testing I came across something else. on this camera autofocus is off, when I start the script AFL is displayed on the right hand side of the screen. if status led=1 AF light will flash before picture.
if status led is 0 only the led on the back is flashing.
(and with off none of the leds flash) When CHDK is running on the right upper corner it states opt:24 or 25 on startup, is that a temp reading? because it is definately not zoom.

Yes, this prevents the camera from crashing, the lens retracts, the display stays on with the last taken picture and the script continues to work.  :)
Do you think this will only work if the display stays on?

bklite uses different code so what you see sounds normal - I assume the display goes back off after each shot?

In the CHDK Settings menu, do you have the Disable LCD Off option set to Always?
In the Canon menu, do you have the Lens Retract option set to 0 Sec ?

Sounds normal to me - these things depend on how you setup the script parameters.

Nothing to do with the script - that's the reading from one of the camera's internal temperature sensors. See CHDK Manual : Show Temperature

Good news - that isolates the problem.

Now that I know what the problem is, there are some thing we can try.  Please test the attached version.

disable lcd off is set at alt
canon menu ->lens retract is set at 1 min

...running new script now....after 3 pictures I checked settings and restarted script, it is on playkey, but have not seen lens retract

canon menu ->lens retract is set at 0 sec

lens is not retracted between shots

display stays on, only goes black during shot as intended

you improved something, the time in the log file is fixed now

Watching the script loaded on my A1200 move the lens in & out between shots right now. Display off except while taking each shot.

Please enable logging and post the ULTIMATE.LOG file here as an attachment.
