Now that I know what the problem is, there are some thing we can try.  Please test the attached version.

Ok. Tested it. Seems to behave exactly like the previous version. So lens retracts, display stays on. I can upload the logfile if needed later.

Curious, different result. with me only the first testfile did a lens retract. Timing issue?

Testing now on my S100 - closest camera I have to an S95.  The new code has additional quite long delays inserted - if you were a bit impatient then what you would have seen corresponds to your reported observations.  I'll try to tune those to be a lot shorter.

Incidentally,  the original script and the test versions do not crash my S100.  So this is almost certainly an issue with how the S95 handles the set_lcd_display( ) function.

The S100 does have one generation newer dryos and from digic 4 to 5 compared to the s95...and the 480 is even digic 3, maybe they are just that much slower....the older the cam, the longer the needed delay?

Probably not.  My ancient A560 demonstrates the same crash behaviour using Playkey in the original script but works properly with the test script.

Updated test script.  Using Playkey now works smoothly on my S100 and A560.

Let me know what you see?

Improvement, the lens will now retract while screen is black
on the A480 after starting script shot is taken, screen goes black, lens retracts......after 3 minutes.....on/off key has to be pressed twice to power up, so it is not dead. it is just happy doing nothing.
to test that I ran it again with statusled=0 and although the lens does not come out again I can see a blinking led even after a few minutes of inactivity..if I press the on/off button, the status led stops blinking.

Please attach a log file.  Let the camera run for at least 4x the shot interval you set when you do so please.

call me a liar, I've rerun the script 20 times, testing different timings when first shot was taken and can't reproduce that.
the camera only goes black between first and second shot after that lcd stays on.

I had this moment that I touched a key between shots and that ended in the statusled lit with no more shots taken, but that is it
