a while back i tried to solve the shift in zoom that occurs if you set it via the script. although waterwingz was very helpfull we could not pin it down
by setting the zoom manually i could prevent that shift during each shot, so for runs up until 24 days it is only a minor issue.

when i was running UI in debug mode at 30s-2min interval (much shorter in debug mode) to test reboot I noticed that after 1 or 2 reboots it would create that same shift in zoom as if zoom was set in UI. But it was not, zoom was done by canon's custom setting at reboot only, in UI it was set to 'off'.

by setting the percentage close to what manual setting i had (market50mm=real11mm=FL:10701=EFL:49938=ZS:5=approx 60%) the shift in zoom after reboot is gone.
for the last 20 reboots it seems stable like this.

i do not feel this is a good solution, but thought it might be relevant to narrow this timing issue down.
I will set up a rig with these setting to test reboot on long runs, since it does work.

I'm very confused here. 

The script gives you the option to either not set the zoom position or to set it to a fixed percentage position.  There is no way to turn "off" the zoom setting in the script parameter and to also define a zoom position.  What am I missing?

after testing it some more I hear an extra click before and after the shot when zoom shift happens......probably the zoom being activated.
the zoom shift issue is there with all CHDK scripts that implement zoom or reboot, so maybe this deserves a seperate thread.
and no worries, it confused me a bit too....I'll try to explain better....you are missing that i define zoom position in canon's firmware(called CF after this)

In Ultimate Intervalometer(called UI after this) you can set the zoom to OFF, yes? (I do not care yet if that is really off, it's what it is called in the script)

On my S95 i have the ability to set zoom manually (P, M, auto mode, whatever) and save that setting to custom mode (C mode)
If i then boot CHDK in custom mode it will start up with the zoom as set when I saved it in P, M or auto mode.

Now I have set zoom in CF and have not set it in UI.
Zoom will happen at (re)boot as per CF 'C' setting.
This works stable until a reboot, then the zoom shift with each shot sets in.......out of sync with shoot mechanical clicks are noticable after reboot

Other combinations:
setting it in UI, not setting it in CF: creates the zoom shift with each shot from start. (also happens on other cam models like my M10 and A series)

setting it both in UI (60%) and in CF (50mm): seems to be stable in zoom setting even after a reboot.  (only possible with camera's that support a custom mode)

Okay - I now understand what you are seeing.  Thanks for expanding on your explanation.

Having said that, I can't explain why scenario three works best other than there being something in the sequence of having the Canon firmware set the zoom position and then causing the script to also set essentially the same zoom position that makes a difference.  I wonder what would happen if  the script was modified to set the zoom several times in a row with a small delay between each setting?  It would be easy enough to try that if you want.

I think the small delay is covered with the debug mode and makes no difference other than that the extra clicks are more out of sync than with regular intervals

This all does remind me however to the same trouble i've had years back with the ISO in CHDK vs ISO in CF...in those days I also had to set both CHDK and CF to the same ISO if i did not want changes in iso during shoots...nowadays it still mucks up behaviour if you'd try setting iso in CHDK....so haven't really touched that in years.

In that case scenario 3 works best because CHDK does not replace CF, but just creates a film-thin layer over CF...and when timing is right you can look through that layer, so what is underneath should have the same setting.
at a reboot CF zoom probably has priority over CHDK resulting in similar behaviour to setting zoom in CHDK at a regular start.
