ixus 800IS from 2001 - there is no play button, how to run firmware update?

Hi,

I bought an ixus 800IS, back in 2001.
There is a CHDK firmware for it, but cannot find out how to get the firmware installed.

All instructions I can find, it always says "press the play button to turn the camera on, not the on-off button"
This camera does not have a play button, so what would i need to press to be able to flash the unit?

I have tried out all sorts of button combinations, but just cannot get it to work.
Would be great, if someone could help me out.

I don't own this camera but I would try this:

1) set the play mode on the dial ([>])
2) press on/off button

The idea is that you have to turn on the camera in playback mode - this doesn't matter how do you do this. Cam must be just started with closed lens.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have tried all that, and i can see the logo as well on boot, but there is no firmware update function.
when i go into the menu, i can only choose "transition" in the first menu.
all other entries are grayed out.

any more ideas?

Have you figured out which firmware version your camera has?

Download the right CHDK package. Copy all files from the zip package to the SD card. This zip file contains the file ps.fir. This file is necessary so that appears in the Canon menu "firm update".

Use the program STICK. This program does all steps for you. You need a camera photo.

I am pretty sure i got the right firmware, as i followed all the steps to retrieve it and found the corresponding firmware.
first used a tool to format and make the SD boot-able, that worked.
stuck the SD into the camera, turned it on and could see the logo.
but no firmware update.

used the STICK program now.
that is pretty neat!!
it found the same firmware and prepared the SD card for me.
stuck the card in again, but no luck.
the first tab still only has "Transition" enabled.
tried making the SD read-only and writable, took a picture and tried again, but still no luck.

If saw the round CHDK logo when you turned your camera on, the CHDK is loaded! You don't need to use Firmware Update - you already have CHDK running.

Press the "Print" button to enter <ALT> mode and start using CHDK.

yes, i can access the menu, but it is not permanent.
i would prefer it to be in the eeprom, as i otherwise always have to make sure i copy the stuff onto my SD cards.

That's not going to happen. CHDK loads into RAM and goes away everytime the camera turns off. That's the way it supposed to be - no permanent changes to the camera. While it might be possible to overwrite the camera's permanent memory, I'm guessing nobody is going to want to experiment with that and risk "bricking" their camera at the first mistake.

ok sorry, must have misread the instructions.

i thought by being able to "install the firmware" it would actually reside in the camera and not on the SD.
