What I would like to do is use continuous drive mode, versus single shot, and see the camera perform. Maybe the buffer is not large enough to do, say, three RAW shots in a row. I thought it was the time it takes to write a RAW file, but it's possible that's not the issue. I cannot see that 'continuous' drive mode is usable when shooting RAW.

I have a SanDisk Ultra II 4GB SDHC card (because I didn't feel like paying the extra for an Extreme III) and I don't have any noticeable delay in RAW writes, seems just the same as JPEG only...

I just did a test, shot Manual, shutter speed 1/1000, with the Ultra II

Continuous drive from half-press, for 30s

JPEG (8MP Superfine) only: 21 photos = 0.7 FPS
JPEG (8MP Superfine) + RAW: 13 photos = 0.43 FPS

JPEG (0.3MP Normal) only: 22 photos = 0.73 FPS
JPEG (0.3MP Normal) + RAW: 13 photos = 0.43 FPS

So I guess the fastest you can get is ~ 0.73 FPS... maybe an Extreme III would help, maybe not... I don't have one to test... but at least you have some continuous drive mode performance numbers to compare to with your own SD card

is changing any of the sounds associated with canons that dont have the option to do so particulary the 590 ie: shutter sound possible with chdk???

I ran across this interesting discussion at dpreview.

Continuous shooting speeds

It seems someone is able to get faster continuous modes out of their Canon camera. They suggested that the developers of CHDK might be able to implelment how it is done, into a CHDK menu or override option or something. From what I understand it would require making specific digital-zoom steps available that would match the resolution of smaller output image sizes.

Yes, and it is very useful too! I have the functions I am using most frequently in the user menu. Assigning items to the menu may be a bit difficult at first, but if you follow the instructions here

I just bought a new PS950IS and I tried the CHDK beta (1.01b). I already use it on a SX100IS with succes. With the 950IS I cant turn off the noise reduction for long exposure. I tried to turn off the dark frame substraction that I find in the raw menu and it does not work. For now I dont save in raw format, only JPG.

Hi, I tried CHKD beta first time on my new 590is (fw1.01b) but after conversion RAWz to DNG with DNG4PS-2 (couple of diferent ver. incl beta) I got DNGz with poor colors (poor WB - looks more violet). There in not appropriate camera type or color profile in DNG4PS-2 ?

did you open the dngs in an aproriate program? because on my system, just the thumbnails of these dngs look like with a wrong wb setting (the embedded jpg). when i open them (not the embedded data, but the real raw data) it looks fine.

Which button is used as the "[FUNC]/[ERASE]/[SHOOT]" button for the A590IS? As many users of custom menu and CHDK know, there is a step that varies with different camera models. On some your use the Function button, on some the Erase and on some you do a half press of the shutter button.

im new to the photo world and to CHDK even more.

Im using CHDK on my PS A590 IS and it works wonders. There is just one thing that is bugging me and I looked everywhere and cant find a solution.

Whenever the CHDK OSD is on, there is one frame that I'm trying to remove
It basically cover half of the screen, its not movable and it looks like something like this:

Anyone has any idea of what this frame is? Because i can barely see what pics im taking with that frame on the screen +(

you need to switch this off in the 'Debug Parameters' menu, set 'Debug Data Display' to [none]

I just used DNG4PS-2 0.2.3 Beta build 256 with Canon PS IS5 profile (with other camera profiles same result) for processing CHDK RAW then open in Photoshop CS4 with Camera RAW 5.1 and saved as jpeg:

Why is a problem with white ballance ?

It looks, as if it is off 😉. Seriously, I do not expect the raws to "work out of the box", so to say. I think RAW literally means raw data from the sensor. The camera does some internal postprocessing to produce the JPG.

You have to do the same to get a desired result. The postprocessing may involve setting the white - balance manually or automatically. Check out the free programm UFRaw, it may be helpful. You may also wish to read the RAW thread of this forum here: RAW Shooting and Processing.

Thanks for your help. I was using the [ERASE] button, but there is a difference between the A590IS and the A620. For the A620, the first line of the user menu worked for me. For the QA590IS I couldn't get anything programmed in the first line but once I went down a line in the User Menu, everything I programmed was saved.

In addition, you can save more than 10 values with the A590IS, which is nice if there are more than 10 items that you want in the custom menu.

My a590is do not boot (even turn on) when I lock the SD. If I use it unlocked, the camera turn on without a problem, but in that case it do not load CHDK.

What Do Im doing wrong?
