Well, how could possibly jpegs have an higher range, if they use data from a lower density source? that extra bit does not add any useful info to what is already there.
Nope, but it does make kind of defeat the purpose of creating bracketed exposures from a single 10-bit RAW file in order to do HDR tonemapping! (Incidentally, the way they fit 10 bits of range in 8 bits of data is kind of clever... or seemed so to me).
Thanks for the tip about the RAW resolution, -- didn't realize that (was going from a combination of the
A720 specs, file size, and what worked). I'll keep that in mind if I decide to do any manipulation of the RAW.

Just switched over to the new build, and I just wanted to express my gratitude for the effort you've put in to port this and get it working to this level. I have the 1.01b firmware.
The good news: this release *seems* to have fixed the lockups when shooting continuous auto-exposure brackets using JPEG+RAW, and the switch to massive overexposure after a few shots (beyond the Ev steps set). I swear my card benchmark speed has gone up significantly too!
Edit: got grids issues resolved, I think?
The bad news: I've discovered that it will crash (power off, lens stuck fully extended) when using Ev bracketing in continuous mode, RAW writing, and the really handy built-in custom timer. I get 4 good shots, then it does it. It did it twice in a row tonight, after exactly the 4th shot. Works fine with JPEG autobracketing and JPEG autobracketing with custom timer. RAW+custom timer works fine, without bracketing on. Seems to be only when I have all 3 combined, oddly enough.
Dunno if it's pertinent, but I've got a kind of slow SD card, so I could see it taking excessively long to write, more so than the custom timer setting would expect.
... and, the WEIRD: when face detection picks up something, it will cause the display to flicker and exit out of the CHDK menus! This is not in any way serious, but is a little peculiar and entertaining. Happened with the previous build too.
