11: Menu Button Display Position selects where you are each time you hit the MENU button

0: Previous (top if power off): Every time you hit MENU you are where you were the last time you hit it, unless you've turned off the 20D, in which case it starts again at the top of the menu list.

1: Previous: You are where you were the last time you hit the Menu button even if you've turned off the 20D.

2: Top. Every time you press the MENU button you start at the top of the list. (hint: use JUMP to jump to each section)

After the blue led was lit, I waited a little over a minute, then turned off the camera (and removed the battery).

It was enough, and all wen't well.

Put the file on the card and choose to update firmware via menu.

I use this file to turn the hack on and off, because it seems to sometimes drain my battery for some reason.

I was already using with success CHDK on my Powershot A610.
Last Friday, i brought a near mint second hand 350D (shutter count @ 3097 !) with standard 17-55 plastic toy, 2 batteries, compatible grip & 1GB CF for 200€. A bargain to me.
Yesterday, I brought a more serious lens, the New Sigma DC 17-70 2.5-4.0 HSM OS MACRO. (Atchoum!)

Yes, this SLR is now old but still doing the job !
It's a big step forward in quality (Dynamic range & ISO sensitivity) from my PS A610.
And don't forget it is the man behing the camera who's doing the picture, not the device (yes, it helps) 😉

Ready now to test that.

1 - I successfully format the CF card bootable.
Made that with Cardtricks 145 i found on a german site.
I choose only "make bootable", works.
My CF was FAT32, so it remains.

2 - No problem at all to enable the bootflag on 350D.

3 - Copy then files from zip archive to the CF root.

I'am using the latest version, the one with the Custom White Balance shortcut (Validated by a "Canon bip".)
Very usefull. It is now the way it should have been designed by canon ...

No problem to access all settings via the Info Button. Good idea.

ISO3200 shortcut is OK. (ISO and then "*"). Validated also by a "Canon bip".

Spot metering is working.

I only get one time an Error 99. Maybe i've been too fast in navigating the menu.
Did not happen again.

Is it possible to switch flash in manual mode in the future?

I noticed that the 400D hack has AutoISO. Is there anyway that can be ported into this firmware or are they completely incompatible?

I wish I could understand the code (only been an high level programmer) to do this myself. Shouldn't it be fairly easy to implement only for manual mode? I should be able to detect manual mode (fixed aperture/shutter) and adjust the ISO so that the exposure is in the center. Perhaps this is not as easy as it appears to be.

I can't believe I messed this up I'm normally ok at this stuff.

I followed the instructions here http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/350D

I formatted the card with cardtricks and copied the scanled onto it and ran the firmware update, the blue LED lit and I waited a few minutes and took the battery out.

I reformatted the card with cardtricks made it bootable and ticked "CF boot sector" and then copied the entire contents of the "350d_all_in_infov2" folder from the mediafire share into the root directory of the CF card.

I put my battery back in the 350d and inserted the CF card

As soon as I inserted the card (before I could even shut the door or turn the power on) the blue led lit steady

I closed the CF door and turned the camera on but nothing happpend the LED just stayed lit.

If I press the shutter button I get the aperture and shutter speed come up on the lcd but nothing else happens. The camera will autofocus but not take a picture and I can't enter the menu.

I have to pull the battery to turn the camera off.

If I insert a formatted non bootable CF card the camera waits a moment then turns on but says "err CF" on the display, I can do everything except take photos.

If I turn the camera on with no card I get no errors, the camera works fine and I can even take a picture.

As soon as I put card with chdk back in I just get the steady blue light and no response.

I tried reformatting the card again, making it bootable with "cf boot sector enabled" and this time copied the contents of the bootflag folder onto the card and put it into the 350d

This time, once again before the door is even shut the orange light flickered a moment then the orange and blue lights flashed on and off in an alternating pattern, the camera doesn't switch on, it remains unresponsive unless I press the shutter button which again just brings up aperture and shutter speed on the lcd but the camera does nothing more. Again I can AF but the shutter wont release, Can't enter menu etc.

I have to pull the battery again to turn the camera off.

So in summary

Inserting card with chdk on results in steady blue light and unresponsive camera
Inserting card with bootflag on results in alternating blur and orange flashes and unresponsive camera
Inserting non bootable card results in "err cf " on lcd but camera is otherwise normal
Inserting no card results in normal operation.

Can anyone help? Any ideas what I have done wrong? I love this camera and would hate to have to buy a new one and even if I did I would still want to get this hack right!

I really don't know what to do, the camera seems to be healthy, I really thought the bootflag thing would have worked.

What is your cameras firmware version?

I really really thought it was 1.0.3, so much so that I didn't bother checking.

It's 1.0.2

I suppose that's the problem, the only thing now is that I can't do a firmware upgrade because when I put normal card in with the firmware on I get "err CF" and can't load the update.

Maybe I have set the camera to boot from CF successfully but I keep feeding it files intended for newer Firmware or maybe something deeper has happened.

I suppose I would need a bootflag intended for 1.0.2 firmware so I could restore the camera to normal, then upgrade firmware, then apply process again.

I'm probably the only person in the world still with 1.0.2 so the chances are I'm stuck with a prefectly healthy camera that just needs to be somehow switched back to booting from rom

EDIT: reading more into it, it seems that bootflag should be run from the firmware menu too and I can't do that so I have no idea what to do.

I'm not sure why the card with the chdk gives a solid blue light and the card with the booflag gives flashing blue and orange but either way it happens even with the cf door open and the camera turned off, only pulling the battery turns it off.
