Don't worry about it. I have over 14000, and I have read on one of these forums that someone had 41000. As long as they do not start increasing, you should be okay.

AFAIK, the bad pixels detected by badpixel.lua are those that are already known to be bad from the factory.

Trying to make usb remote cable for SX20 following http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/USB_Remote_Cable instructions.
Observed strange camera behavior.
When using 3xAAA batteries camera does not respond in any way but when replace batteries with computer usb port everything works as expected.
Cable with batteries works well with another camera but not with SX20.
Changing batteries voltage (number of batteries) from 3.0v up to 5.1v does not help.
Batteries polarity is right, checked several times.
Camera has 1.02D firmware with 938 CHDK build.
Does anybody have same problem?
Appreciate any suggestions, ideas.

I just ran CHDK benchmarks on four SDHC cards with differing Classes and then used a test script to compare them while shooting for two scenarios: (1) just JPGs, and (2) RAW/DNG with JPGs.

The script was setup to test different SDHC Class cards under varying camera setups. I wanted to see what the 'real world' results would be versus benchmarks. The script recorded the times between shots in a series of photos. The average times for each Class were then compared to the benchmarks to determine which would be the best Class for me when using the SX20 IS.

Summation
As the Class increased in number, so did the throughput and the amount of time required to save the photos decreased when shooting in RAW/DNG mode. The test result times decreased appreciably with Class 4 and higher cards when using RAW/DNG (although only gradually after Class 4). There was minimal time savings when shooting just JPGs. (Testing of video was not included in this series of tests - perhaps another time...)

Recommendation from results
When using the SX20 IS, save money and use Class 4 cards for most occasions. Use a higher Class if your budget allows or you want to speed up transferring your photos to your computer. I noticed a moderate reduction in transfer times (card reader to computer) as the Class of cards got better.

Help needed!

I just installed v1.02B -build #938, but for some reason I can't run 'badpixel.lua' like I could in the earlier version.
I get to the CHDK directory then down to Scripts OK, but I can't get down to CHDK/SCRIPTS/TEST/ badpixel.lua.
I've tried different buttons etc but no good. Until I run 'badpixel.lua' I can't select DNG.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Why not put the card in a card reader and copy badpixel.lua to the CHDK/SCRIPTS folder?

Well that's worth a try, but all was OK with the older version I had.
Also how can I make a dummy 'badpixel.bin' file that I could put in the root of CHDK directory. Doing that should then allow me to select DNG in the parameters. Yes/No ??

When you say you "cant get down to scripts/test/badpixel" what do you mean? It doesn't show that directory when you get into script parms menu and drill down to 'load script from file'? Are you sure the directory is there? and the script? How is your card partitioned? I'm using 1.02d#938 on a 1.02c SX20, so I'm not identical to you, but its working for me. I dunno how to make a dummy badpixel.bin, but I can send you mine if you want to try to use it. It had less that 7000 bad pixels.

i although have the firmware 1.02b and with both revisions (934 and 93😎 the badpixel.bin works fine.

With "Load script from, file...." i can select badpixel.lua under CHDK/SCRIPTS/TEST. And after running the script i have the known number of 6689 bad pixel.

Where is exactly your problem with this script? Could you load it? What happens if you start it?

UPDATE !
Well I took the 4gb card out & put it in the card reader, swapped from the 2mb partition with SDM & on the 3.8gb partition was the whole CHDK directory & sub directory, (not the boot files) but with no files attached !
CHDK was reading this partition. I deleted this DIR & copied CHDK off the 2mb partition to the 3.8gb,- swapped partitions back with SDM,- locked the card & all OK.
It was then happy to do the 'badpixel.bin' file but saved it to the 3.8gb partition. For what it was worth I then copied this file (& 1 more) to CHDK on the 2mb partition.
I thought CHDK 'swapped' partitions only to store photos,- or is there a partition swap option in the menus some place ??

Only diskboot.bin goes in the small partition. Everything else (the CHDK folders and all your photos) go in the large partition. Except when updating diskboot.bin there's no need to switch partitions.

The CHDK folder can be in either partition. The boot file needs to be in the primary, but the camera can load chdk from the inactive partition. I used SDMInste to set up my 16Gb so that both partitions are ~8G, so that if I set the switch on the card to 'Lock', I load chdk, and if I unlock it, it doesn't, and there's still enough space on the primary partition for the camera to store images in it when not running chdk. By the way, anyone have a better idea than my setup?

The CHDK folder can be in either partition.

CHDK will only use the folder on the same partition the rest of the camera sees. In a bootable dual partition setup, this means your CHDK folder must be on the large partition. Only diskboot.bin on the small partition is used.

Are you saying that CHDK successfully autoboots from a FAT32 partition if you have the lock engaged ? If this is true, then you don't need to partition at all. If it isn't true, there's something wrong with your description.

The normal way to have the camera see the large partition without CHDK is to swap them so the large one is first. You can normally swap back by manually loading CHDK, but AFAIK that is not available on sx20 (someone might want to try the my canon basic manual loading method...)

Never tried that. I don't have the boot file on the large partition. I leave the small one primary and it boots from that when locked. But you are right--it might be worth a try. Then I can just run one big partition... But my smaller partition is 4Gb FAT16... I thought it had to be FAT16 to boot, right?

This is wrong. Where code and documentation disagree, code always wins 😉

CHDK can only use one folder, it's not smart enough to find one on the non-active partition. The OS only knows about one partition, and CHDK uses regular OS functions to access the stuff in the CHDK directory. For multi-partition CHDK tricks the OS into using a different partition as the one partition it knows about.

(an aside, I suspect we should be able to mount the secondary partition as say B/ and access it with regular file functions. vxworks certainly has the capability to do this, and I would expect DryOS does as well. But possibly the camera software would get confused...)

But my smaller partition is 4Gb FAT16... I thought it had to be FAT16 to boot, right?

It does. My confused stemmed from your statement that

implying both must be FAT32. 4 GB and 12GB makes sense.

Talking about partitions...

I've changed the swap-partitions-function, so you can swap up to four partitions.
This should work up to 4x4GB=16GB cards.
Although it should work with smal boot partition, big FAT32 partition and two more FAT16 partitions.

You can select the partition you like with:
Miscellaneous->Swap partition [Part2/4]
...shows the number of partitions on card and the active partition [Part"active partition"/"number of partitions"]

With the following switch you can see with "filespace" which partition is active:
OSD parameters->filespace->show partition number (on/off)
On: And the "filespace" shows 2:500MB ("active partition":nnnMB or "active partition":nnn%)

I use one partition with chdk-DE another with this chdk and another for own experiments.
You have to copy the entire CHDK to every partition on the card.

To swap a partition you select the partition you want and reboot the camera.

I have 1.02b, so i don't know what about 1.00f?
Are there open isues?

SX20 MD VIDEO
Are there any scripts for MD Video that will work with the SX20. I have a working script (MDVID) on my A590 (rem Johan Van Barel 02-04-200😎 which appeared to work on the SX20 except the video side does not - it only takes a single frame image but no video created. The MD functions ok Tried it with camera set to AUTO/AV/VIDEO - no difference. At times the word FROZEN appears at the top left of the screen.
Unfortunately I am hopeless at script writing but could make small adjustments to an existing script.
