In the past two days I have seen similar random shutdowns on my camera (1.02d) too, though it happens randomly during initialization and does not depend on pressing a button. This was surprising to me, as I have never ever seen this happening before. So I was thinking about what has/could have changed. One of the possibilities that popped into my mind was cold. In these days I have been using my camera mainly outside and it is freezing and snowing here. So after making up this theory, I did notice that the crashes do not occure after staying inside a building for a longer period of time. Can you remember/confirm where you were using your camera when the crashes happened? Was it outside and was it cold there? Though it would still be strange, since without CHDK there are absolutely no crashes.

The problem about the orientation metadata has been discussed and confirmed before, even on the german forum and by myself too. It sure is annoying, but not annoying enough for me to put it into a visible place on my priority list. Sry. Has anybody seen these symptoms on another camera with the orientation sensor?

Same problem here. SX20, 2 different card,one 16gb the other 8gb. 2 partitions on each. I didn't had that problem one month ago but since I d/l the version 1023, I have had that random problem everyday. Very annoying. Is there a place where I could re-download an older version like pre 1000? It would probably cure that pesky problem.

@NEZtron also had problems with the newer build versions on a SX20 fw 1.02b and obviously you are seeing the same thing with fw 1.02d, so it might be something "in common" with the builds.

The main problem is that I cannot easily debug this since it is not reproducible. Recently I've been to the CES, I've made hundreds of shots there and I did NOT have the random crashes, except for once. I was, again, outside of the building at that time (even though it's LV, it is really not so warm there at this time of the year). Though to be honest, I doubt that it was the temperature as it was definitely >0°C.

My point is, they are random crashes, but not totally random. Most of the time my camera works without problems for a LOT of shots continously, and then at once it crashes a few times, and then it works again for a week or two. There MUST be some condition triggering this.

It is most useful if you have the main.dump that corresponds the build that crashed.

@ Ultima. I know this must be very difficult for you to find a cure for that pesky problem. For me, it does it every single day without exception. It ONLY crash at startup. Does that once or twice, and then i'm good to go. It never crash while running or taking photos. Never. I might take a few pics, then restart the camera 10 minutes later and it will crash on startup once again. It does that continuously, day after day.

I will see what those older version do for that problem and let you know. That problem started in December and I never had these crash before.

I have tried quite a few different things and all I can tell you is that even if you try a different card this will not help. I have d/l a stable build on this CHDK website (German) http://forum.chdk-treff.de/autobuild.php to no avail. First time I start the camera, it was fine. I then put the camera to off, then restart the camera about 15 minutes later and it crashed.

I then remembered that back in the beginning of December I had started to install some different scripts and I think that was about that time that I began having problems. So, I removed all the scripts that I had added. Start the camera, and the first time, it crashed. Restart it, then it's fine. I am really getting sick of that.

The thing is that I had absolutely no problem whatsoever about 1 month ago. It never crashed once since i installed CHDK at the end of August. It ran fine for over 3 months. I have tried older versions to no avail. I know it must be a very small glitch that is causing that but I can't put my finger on it. I have now exhausted all my options so now it will take a specialist in here to help me and others find a cure to that problem. Please someone?

It would help me a lot if you could try two older builds, revision 999 would be a good choice, and if that still crashes, then try 972. Whether either of these crashes will be a start. If 999 works perfectly, you could try 1004, because from all of my recent patches, I'd judge the action_stack was the riskiest. The romlog is probably a nice source of information, but I'd rather avoid it if we can narrow down to a specific revision. Thx for your support.

@damijanp Thanks for those older version. I downloaded the 964 over 3 hours ago and I can already tell you that my SX20 never crashed once on startup. I probably started the camera about 6 times in those 3 hours and not once did it crashed.

@Ultima That older (964) build looks promising. I will play all day with the camera and see how it goes but I can see a difference just by the way it boots. Even when it wasn't crashing, it was slower to boot. Now with this older version, I remember that this was the way my SX20 was booting before that problem began. I will keep you posted at the end of the day and inform you if the non crashing still holds. But I have a feeling this is a good stable version for you to begin with. I know you would have liked a newer version for you to begin working on the problem (like 972) but damijanp came up with these so that's why I d/l the 964. Should give you something to work from. 😀

Subsequent compilations have start problem

1 - The problem occurs when the memory has photos.
2 - With empty memory is more difficult to assess the failure
3 - With two bootable partitions 4GB in Fat16 works best "dbasmith" 😎 Phobia at Fat32! 😛 I prefer one large partition

Thank you so much for this. I have installed version 999 about 8 hours ago and my SX20 has NOT crashed once. Usually, it would have crashed at least 3 or 4 times. I will continue for another day with version 999 but my hopes are high. I am working tomorrow but should be able to test it later in the evening and give you another feedback about 999. Then, I will install 972 and see where it goes from there. I will keep in touch with you.

Again, a big thanks for all your effort and I am sure that by the end of the week, you should have a good idea where the version with the "bug" is.

sorry i haven't had a chance to try any of these builds! have been busy with work.

if i try 999...and it works ok, do i then try 1004 (as that is the next newest build)?

why not enable zebra or edge with these? (just curious)
