sorry i haven't had a chance to try any of these builds! have been busy with work.
if i try 999...and it works ok, do i then try 1004 (as that is the next newest build)?
why not enable zebra or edge with these? (just curious)
thanks so much Ultima!!
will try this tonight once the munchkin is in bed 😀
As per Ultima recommendation, after you try 999 and if it's running fine, you should try 972. I have not had a problem today with 999 😀

Oh my bad, I wrote the exact opposite of what I meant. If 999 works, then try 1004, not 972. The point is, assuming that it got broken at one place and it has been wrong since then, if 999 is working, then you'd have to try a newer (=more recent) version and "hope" to find the breakage. Sorry, I mistyped it in my previous post, but I corrected it now.
The thing about zebra and edge is to try to minimize crashes caused by the lack of memory. Theoretically these crashes shouldn't be happening any more, since both zebra and edge have been modified to work with the
sx20, but since you might be experimenting with older builds, I thought I'd give this advice just to stay on the safe side and rule out this possibility. Though now that 999 seems to work fine, it shouldn't matter.

Hi ultimA and Thank you!!!
Test for 1.02B, rev 972, 999, 1004
I tried all three compilations and three with the shutdown problem. Was tested with 300 mb of photos in memory
This happens at random. In some cases, the camera starts, shooting photos, I turn off camera and start again ... Lamp sheds light on... and turn off the camera. After three or four attempts camera starts well
Do not know if this can help,... above download versions that I keep. These works well, without shutdown problem.
Greetings NEZtron

unfortunately still have the same problem with v 999...
but seems to happen only when there are pictures stored on the camera
as you recommended, no zebra or edge and no raw being used.
going to try 972...
edit: can confirm that turn on crash only happens when there are pictures stored, whether it be 1 or more...

Well...my Camera just doesn't like using fat32 or somethin....cause 972 does the same thing, even with no pics stored.
all with no customizing of chdk...stock config.
i double checked my firmware version...it is most definitely d...hmmm
(or does a camera use fat32 regularly without chdk?) <- edit: tested and it does....
maybe the sd card? have ordered new one....will test again when it arrives.
oh well, will stick to using 4GB fat16 partitions till then
Thanks so much to everyone for trying to help solve the problem,
your all great.

Did you try version 1004? Mine work like a charm with 999. And there are about 50 photos on the card at the moment. I will try 1004 later tonight and report.

>Subsequent compilations have start problem
>1 - The problem occurs when the memory has photos.
>2 - With empty memory is more difficult to assess the failure
Do you mean, when you do firmware update, that camera crash on restart, before last image is show and chdk logo is show ?
this problem i have too very selden on IX1000 HS
when do short after, a second firmware update, most times it work.but sometomes not, then, i need choose other image and switch off the camera.
I notice this the first time when i use
#define CAM_ZEBRA_ASPECT_ADJUST 1
#define CAM_ZEBRA_NOBUF 1
the crash happen always(when i have longer switch off camera), when i hack zebra display mode, so it show also on play.
but strange is, crash happen, before a image of canon Firmware is show and chdk bootpic is show.
when i use zebra normal(that it is only show on shoot)then i get very selden crash.
seem it depend on jpg pic.i see when i use superfine jpg, i get more often crash.

Bad news. This morning before going to work, I start the camera and at first start everything is fine. I then shut it off, restart, it crashed. Restart, crashed again. Restart, crashed, Restart, crashed. On the fifth time, it runs fine. So I am at the same situation that I was before. Tonight I will install version 972 and see where it goes from there. :'(
Edit: Zebra mode is off and edge too.
Bernd R
I have now shoot a image with superfine and get sooner crashes, but when i do a restart short later, it work ok
I switch off the defines for zebra aspect und nobuf, but after more retry i get too crash.
i also test without ptp compile Option.too crash
the version i see no crash was 969, then upgrade to 1004 and zebra stuff get add here as far i know.so i thought it was this
so the question is what is add between 969 and 1004 in bootcode that can cause this.
ultimA
Thanks for all the valueable info. Though I'll wait a little bit more on testing results, since current feedback indicates that things broke between 969 and 972, which, looking at the svn changelog, is not too probable. Could you send me a romlog together with the corresponding main.dump?
Of course, we have more or less assumed that the camera crashes for all of you guys for the same reason, which might not be the case.
bdasmith
the crashes happen whether superfine is enabled or not for me...
Bernd R - if i could get that 969 you have to test with that would be great.
then we can help narrow it down?
ultimA
Since you asked, here is a build to both 1.02b and 1.02d of 969:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=18NAF7F2
Though I'd be surprised if 969 works but 972 does not.
bdasmith
Thanks ultima....i too am beginning to believe it has nothing to do with any of the coding of chdk, but just that a few of our cameras crash trying to swap to the larger partition on startup...i have noticed it isn't as often with 1049 actually....happens but not as often.
Such is life sometimes.

I have tried version 969 and have started and restarted the camera at least 30 times and it never crashed. Then, just for the fun of it, I d/l the latest build (1050) and installed it. I started the camera a few times and all went well. Then by the fourth or fifth time, it crashed again. I then did something I had never did before. Instead of pushing the record (start) button for only half a second, I held it until I could see the splash screen light up. I don't know how many times I have started the camera tonight doing it that way (around 50 times) and it never crashed doing it this way. And remember that this is with build 1050 😳
Then, I thought I might as well try it the old fashion way....like I had always done it before when there was no problem like over 1 month ago. I tried starting the camera with the review button and it crashed immediately. That was the way I had always done it before. I tried 3 times and it would never start even if I held the review button the way I was doing it with the record button. I then proceeded to try and start it with the record button by holding it longer and it boot right up no problem.
So, The more testing I do, the more confused I get. Why will it boot up fine endlessly with the record button and very randomly with the review button. Something for you guys that have the brain for these thing to think about and hoping you can come up with some explanation or better, a fix. 😁 Thanks for reading my long explanation but I really think this might help you by telling you everything.
wowsers51
@bdasmith
How do you start your
SX20? With the review or record button? And how long do you keep those button pressed?
For me, when I had none of these problems, I would always use the review button and only slightly touch it....like a fraction of a second and it would always start just fine with no crash. So by discovering the way I did tonight by holding the record button for about 1.5 seconds until the screen lights up, I am curious on how you do it.
bdasmith
Wowsers...I press and hold the power button for a sec and it turns on into record (picture taking) mode.
is the power button (the one that says 'on/off') the record button your talking about?
i can't stand starting in review mode (unless i purposely do it to look at a picture) i always want to turn it on in record mode.

Yes that's the one I am talking about 😀 Another question. What build are you testing at the moment?
bdasmith
currently have build 1049 installed, with two partitions...some crashes, but not as often....
yup, its a confusing thing for sure.

Hi, ultimA Friends and thanks for all the effort to solve this problem
I already know well, the shutdown of machine.
I was trying to build 969 for (1.02B) and it WORKS WELL!!! with photos (fine or extra fine) and the video memory.
Then surely something is included between 969 and 972 which produces the fall.
I tested with zebra, raw and histogram in display, all stable and machine on and off without problem.
Continue testing tomorrow.
@bdasmith .... is no memory problem, I tested with two 8GB SD memory. I had the same problems that you.
thanks and regards NEZtron

i am in the process of installing 969 to confirm with you NEZtron. Hopefully will get same results 😀
edit: so far i am having success...will keep you posted.
