Noob Feature Question: Programmable Computerized Zoom

Sorry if this isn't an appropriate place for this question (or if it's just generally a really silly one)

I would like a function where I would set a "start focal" and an "end focal length" and a "duration" and then be able to record a zoom (either video or a number of stills) for the chosen duration beginning with the chosen start and concluding with the chosen end focal lengths.

Is this an achievable function of CHDK? I stumbled across this while googling around trying to find a way to do this.

I'm open to purchasing a camera; whatever would be recommended to get the job done effectively but preferably affordably too haha

Thank in advance :)

You can control zoom from CHDK script. Control of zoom speed is limited, it depends on the camera but most only have one or a few speeds. So for video you wouldn't be able to arbitrarily control the duration, but for stills you can change the zoom between shots.

If you want a lot of zoom and don't have other specific requirements, the SX cameras are probably the best option. Many of the very old cameras (mostly digic III and earlier) only have small number of zoom steps.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

Wow, thank you both for the replies (very quick ones at that!). That's really helpful.

c_joerg - that's really cool and I'd love to try it. Will that functionality only work with the specific camera that you have or with any compatible with CHDK?

I'm looking at getting SX530 HS.

Do y'all think that's a good and workable choice or is there one that you might recommend more highly?

Again, thanks so much :)

I run the Script with my SX50, SX230 and S110 without problems.
If the Script crashes,  you have to increase the Delays.
