I use the default apperture settings, but sometimes it´s needed to use a ND filter, like to give movement idea in a waterfall shot. I search like a crazy a nd filter here in Brazil, but where i find it´s extreme expensive for a very simple filter. I use it to for make some light drawings in normal lightning situations. It´s been very useful for me, more than apperture override. But i´m afraid now 🙁 :'( 😐: ??? 😳 😛
Don't panic. As stated before, I think there is no ND-Filter in the cam, the ND-Filter setting just increases the aperture. The ND filter is used in other canon cameras that do not have an iris diaphragm for setting the apperture. ND filter cams typically just have 2 aperture settings.
But yeah, an external ND filter may be useful. I have seen relatively cheap ones at the internet that should fit the
A590IS.

I tried to replicate that pattern, but all images (luckily) came out without it at a variety of ISO settings. I do not think that this pattern is a characteristic of the sensor. My first RAW shot with the first version of this port definately had that pattern too.
Strange. I do and did convert with UFRaw. I am happy here.
EDIT: The pattern is there, I did not magnify enough. 😁
EDIT2: Concerning the pattern, I think I found out what it is about. It depends on how dcraw or UFRaw interpolates the Bayer Pattern. The artifacts vanish, if I use the VNG or VNG four colour interpolation instead of the default AHD interpolation.
