First I would like to congratulate the coders here for doing such an amazing work with CHDK !

Well I installed the CHDK on my SX1 and I thought I'd let you know that I tried a long exposure of 2500s as written above and about 5 min after I "started" to take the picture I decided to cancel the shot as I was worried suddenly that it might damage the sensor...
so I tried to push the shutter which did not do anything, and then other keys but none stopped the photo...

Then, I opened the SD door and it beeped, so I closed it.
After that I opened the battery compartment door and it beeped as well.

After a bit, worried that a long exposure could damage the sensor(s) I decided to remove the batteries which I did. After re-closing the batterie compartment door, I started the camera and everything seems as before without apparent problem.

Still I'd like to try the "stars in the sky" long exposure photo one day... so would someone know what are the chances of damaging the hardware with a long exposure shot?

This is new ground, no one really knows what the risks are. If you are really worried about it, wait a while until more people have tried it. Or if you own a cheaper camera, try it on that first.

If I were to guess (and this is ONLY a guess: if you try it and it destroys your camera, you have been warned!) I'd say the risk of hardware damage is fairly low. IMO, the main reason Canon limits exposure to 15 sec or less is noise, and the low demand for exposures that long on this sort of camera.

the bulb mode in dslrs afaik has no limit. basically, avoid long exposures directly into the sun. and maybe watch the ccd temperature.
i guess if the temp gets too high, the camera will shut off anyway.

Hi, I'm really new here and only got CHDK up on my SX10 yesterday. I initially downloaded this program cause I was interested in two things

1. High speed continuous burst mode.
2. Motion detection.

Now I know nothing about scripts and I'm just your average user who stumbled upon this site with words and computer language way beyond his understanding.

I want to know where inside my functions must I set in order to get these two to work? Or am I to install a script or something? If so, which type? Or are both of these functions (Especially the burst mode) not possible due to the camera's hardware capabilities? the SX10IS's continuous shooting mode is just too slow for me.

Anyway this program is great! I love the fact that people commit to this sorta thing, although I think the website is a tad bit messy so I got quite confused with what to do initially. Once again though, thanks for making this program and I really appreciate the effort =)

I just bought a new SX10 and I checked the firmware version, it's 1.02... I *really* need to be able to shoot in RAW, so.. :'(

How can I downgrade my firmware version to 1.01 so I can use the CHDK?

Seems like SX10s are now shipped with 1.02B. I wouldn't buy my SX10 if I hadn't thought chdk would be available for it, and now I am anxiously looking forward for chdk for 1.02B. Before buying the camera I wasn't aware of the many firmware versions and of the fact that they are not downgradable. I wish I could do anything to promote the development of chdk for my version of firmware. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the required kind of programming.

Is there anywhere, except in this thread, a way to know the state of development (if any is done at all)?

AFAIK, no one is working on it. If it happens, it will almost certainly be posted in this thread. It would also be noted on the SX10 wiki page.

There is no schedule or plan for ports. They get done when a developer has the time, skill and motivation to do them. This is not usually influenced by how many people want the port.

If no one has said anything in this thread about a particular firmware being ported, it almost certainly hasn't been started.

If and when someone does a 101b port, it should be there as well.

Note, no amount of people saying they want a particular revision ported makes any difference in how likely it is to actually get ported. Porting to a new firmware revision is easier than porting to a new camera, but it's still a tedious task.

More interestingly, on Canon's website, the later versions are not available for download, so they probably do not represent any improvements over earlier ones. Perhaps they are all the same, and this is just an attempt on the part of Canon to discourage CHDK developers from working on versions for this camera, knowing that just a limited number of users could benefit from their work...

thats bull*. canon could shut us down immediately with a single letter written by their law firm, why would they go through the hassle creating lots & different of firmware versions. besides, if a port is finished, applying the port to a "sister firmware" is not that hard anymore.
most "unofficial" firmware updates by canon fix either things a user doesnt need to be fixed or adds an additional language, or fixes a string somewhere. sometimes this changes the offsets of functions, sometimes not. and that's that.
