I am wondering if its possible to use the left and right buttons of A720 for direct access to iso, wb etc. They don't seem to have a use until you get into some other menu function. Can they be programmed or is this a feature request?

if they have no use (actually even if they DO have use) for other functions, they of course can be reprogrammed to emulate other functions. i already did this in an experimental build (though i used up & down) for fast ev changing.
there is no generic way to implement this as of now though, as a lot of other cameras DO use left/right for functions (not only in menus). so i guess i should move this to feature requests.
