:( thats terrible.. maybe you should include a diode in the future?  I know the diode would cause a voltage drop of about 0.7 volts and I don't know if its even enough to protect it.

yeah it was a regrettable error, but one from which i'll learn no doubt! I've just found a replacement ixus 70 for about 20 pounds UK which is fantastic value.
