Hello all. Just discovered CHDK and I'm assuming I'll be able to upgrade my firmware no problem! I really want a cable release but I don't want to build one. Can I use one designed for a different camera? Here are a couple of examples:

Ricoh CA-1 Cable Release for GX8 / GR Digital Cameras - fotoSENSE

Olympus RM-UC1 (W) USB Remote Cable Control for E510/E410/E400 and SP560uz/SP570uz - fotoSENSE

The Ricoh CA-1 is fine.

Here it is adapted for two cameras :-

Ricoh Switch

Thanks. Any adaptation needed to use it with just one camera? (I hope not!)

No, it works 'straight out of the box'.

Brilliant, thanks!

How about this one instead? It's supposedly compatible with the Olympus one I linked to above - made by JJC, a Chinese company which specialises in copies of remote controls:

It may be but the Olympus ones do not work with with CHDK.

If you want a wireless release, an expensive option (with the current value of the GBP against the USD) is this :- CHDK Remote Shutters - Wireless CHDK Compatible Shutters

The cheaper option is this :- digi-dat  Dienstleistungen - Anlagen - Technik

Maybe they will supply it with just one plug ?

Interesting. But the second option appears to be wired, not wireless?

Have you come across this company? gentLED Camera Remote Control I thought they might be able to make me something small, simple and (hopefully) cheap, so I've emailed them. Theoretically, do you think they would be able to build a remote which can control other functions? Zoom controls would be great.

Here's a JJC one for Canon DSLRs - would this one use CHDK? Canon EOS DSLR JJC 100m Wireless Remote Control Shutter on eBay, also, Remote Controls, Digital Camera Accessories, Photography (end time  16-Jan-09 11:27:42 GMT)

Yes, just like the Ricoh CA-1 that you mentioned.

Certainly have. They make a radio-control 'servo driver' that converts the servo signal into 30ms to 180 ms pulses that a CHDK script can detect and then control zoom, etc.

An IR device is available that works with an Apple remote and also generates pulses of various width that a script can detect.
It will also emulate the Ricoh CA-1 switch :-

CanoRemote

No other Canon remote control devices will work.

I like the look of that CanoRemote with the Apple remote control. Would it do anything other than release the shutter? I suppose not...if it's just emulating the Ricoh CA-1. Would it do the emulation out of the box, or do you have to get clever and adjust the timing of the pulses for yourself?

Edit: just found the maker's thread on this forum, so I'll ask him!
