Hi, I would like to ask the creators and developers of CHDK if it were possible to enable remote control from a smartphone Android, founded along the lines of the application DSLR Controller for Canon EOS range.

Maybe something less complex, without the live view, with only the zoom control and shutter.
One of you will certainly be a programmer who knows CHDK and even Android.

This should be theoretically possible for Android devices which can act as a USB host. This probably excludes most current phones, but includes some tablets.

Androids "USB accessory" mode is supported on Android devices that cannot host, but requires the accessory to be the host. AFAIK no Canon P&S has this capability, so it would not be possible even in theory.

I would say that it is definately possible, but as reyalp mentioned, not with most current phones.  The Android SDK does support USB communication, but only for sdk v 12 and higher (android 3.1).  So from what I have seen, no phones currently support this (tablets only so far).

It is for controlling a toy missile launcher, but could easily be modified (IMO).

http://is.gd/jISKhm is an example of an Android app for DSLR control. My phone runs Cyanogenmod, which has Android version 2.3.5.

The app that you posted requires a PC between the devices, which to me makes no sense. If I was going to connect to a PC anyway, why bother connecting my cellphone?

It probably works via wi-fi - so you can operate the camera remotely.
The PC / laptop just provides an interface between the two devices.

There's an iPhone/iPad system that does the same for Canon DSLR's - I've tried this with a small Netbook and it's very useful.
You can actually be quite a long way from the camera and still control it.

Oh... I see.  Now that opens up some interesting possibilities (using a netbook as the host for remote locations and as a storage offload for example.)

Hmm.. Not that I will do it (for obvious reasons once described), but it would theorecitally be possible to put a camera on a cliff overlooking a vultures nest. If said camera does not have built in wi-fi function, it could be added via usb dongle/remote control.   Nearby, in a protected (but cell tower available) location sits a cell phone and netbook controlling the camera.  If I was a crafty person and had the correct cellphone to cellphone app, I could call that cellphone and control the camera from anywhere in the world.  Possibly even viewing live data.

This would probably be easier than adding lines to reversi!  :haha

Now have a Nexus 7 which supports USB host. Has there been any progress on an Android chdk interface?

In my opinion, the built in wifi of the powershot s110 would make a much more useful interface for android remote control.
1: It is wireless, so it can be controlled from a distance.
2: All android phones supports wifi.
3: No intermediate laptop required.

The disadvantage is of course that it only works with the s110..
