@62ndidiot : to cut the confusion between crashing and normal power off behaviour, I’d suggest  temporarily changing the default ALT button for your port to “movie rec”.  Probably needs the .CFG files all deleted manually when you make the change.
Ported :   A1200    SD940   G10    Powershot N    G16

good idea!
Attached is a build with the video button set to be the default choice for ALT. For this to take effect however,
you will need delete the file CHDK/CCHDK4.CFG on the SD card and reboot.  Now a short press of the video button should give you ALT, and a long press should start video recording (or stop).

Edit: build deleted, corrected build posted further down the thread

Found one more.
get_dial_hw_position
This one is called in kbd.c, let's hope this is the culprit.

Does it enter ALT mode on short press of video?  Does it crash on short or long press of video?

I still do not understand why you have the display of video bitrate.
Today I reinitialized my copy of chdk from svn and rebuilt from scratch.  The bitrate still appears on my camera too, but that could be an artifact of me setting up to view it, and not undoing the set up.  In your case I don't know.  Was the Sd card used in a different camera with CHDK and possibly configured to show this?

Go into the menu and try setting the Alt mode key back to Play.
Maybe everything will work now!

ALT mode on and off with short press 'Video'. when there goes a video recording and when not. after some seconds showed hint on display. no crash, work stable.

Go into the menu and try setting the Alt mode key back to Play.
this is working, now Play toggle ALT mode. change between Preview and Shoot mode with long press Play.
