You can get the memory browser module from any non-DIGIC6 release you find on this page. For example, A1000, right at the top. The file is named memview.flt, it's in CHDK/MODULES. Copy that file to the same directory on card. With the new module, you can adjust the increment by half pressing the shutter.

btw: Blackholes optional console seems to use something like
"sprintf(string, "Img_%4d",get_exposure_counter());"
Img_%04d was better readable, (%02x, I know...)

From this it follows that ZOOM_IN is 0x400 and ZOOM_OUT is 0x800, but you had to see it in the first word at 0x1a278  ???
I assume you pushed the zoom lever all the way, to the both sides, which should be a fast zoom speed.

I made a mod to the physw debug helper. It shows the 3 words bit-by-bit, should make button identification much easier. Bits are shown as their value in the hexadecimal digit, a "ruler" is displayed at the top to make evaluation easier.
