Oh, I didn't know the firmware for the lens was on a different subsystem. Do you know if this is a different chip, or if it is on the same die with the main CPU?
I remember that long time ago (around 2010 or so) I took a lens from a non Canon Camera and placed it on a Canon camera and it sort of work (meaning, it moved in and out, but I didn't take any pictures, since it was just hanging off the main board).
So it could be that there is some generic, non Canon chip that handles all the P&S camera lenses, in which case getting the documentation for it could be very helpful.

That looks like a pretty long project to me. If you're having fun with it, then I don't want to stop you  ;)

I would take an M10 with a manual lens. A used M10 is available for € 100. Then a script with a power down function on it and everything is fine.

My impression is mecha controls the various electromechanical bits (probably like focus, zoom, IS system, and shutter), but much of the logic is in the main firmware.

The thread I linked has references to some 3rd party chips (with different camera models using different chips from different vendors), but how they fit into the "mecha" subsystem isn't clear to me.

Again, my impression is "handles the lenses" is not really the right way to think about it. More like "handles driving PWM for individual actuators".

edit:
You can see the Renesas chip for the G7X on https://photo-parts.com.ua/parts/IMG_STORE/Canon%20G7x%20PCB/g7x_pcb.jpg
Don't forget what the H stands for.
