i would like to atleast be able to focus on things that i can see with my own eyes..
but the canon sx40HS will not focus to infinity "Properly".

and i can see the trees at the top of the hill and even see the branches and leaves with my eyes
but this is what i get with the camera.

is there a way to get some more long range focus on this thing?
i have done some reading here on the forums and i have seen were the focus was cut back for some reason .......
and have seen it in reading some of the build notes for some of the builds.

the focus looks like its off by 2 or 3 steps.  :(

I like to do some astrophotography but Never could like this.....

Is there a way that this can be Fixed ?

here is a photo that i took at 35x OPTICAL zoom and manual focus to its MAX.

Can you provide more information please.

Did you use CHDK to set infinity focus, use manual focus, or let the camera focus?
What was the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO for the image.

Phil.

There looks to be a bit of motion blur in the image, although it might also be heat haze.
Was it a hot day?
How far would you say the distant trees were?

Comparing your image to ones I've taken shows the image to be slightly worse than I would expect; but it may be other factors.

I'd take more images, try and get a higher shutter speed, try a tripod and IS turned off etc.

If astrophotography is what you're interested in you should also try a few night shots on a good tripod with IS off.

Is it any different if you let the camera focus rather than using manual focus to infinity.
The max subject distance override you can set in CHDK for the SX40 is over 9km, so perhaps infinity focus is too far out (although it would be ok for star shots).

Another thing that can affect this is if you are shooting through a window or have a filter on the camera.

you said "perhaps infinity focus is too far out "
i say its Not far enough..
I went and did some star shots and thay were Not in focus as i could Not get enough focus
and if i step it BACK by one it even gets worse.

and a shot of the moon as a sample
this was AFTER a toutchup
